Figures highlighting the country’s international contributions point to its growing influence in addressing challenges such as climate change, food insecurity and access to scientific information.

In the energy sector, China’s crude oil imports reached 320.9 million tonnes during the first eight months of the year, representing a 14.6 percent decline compared with the same period last year.

The figures suggest a shift in China’s energy purchasing patterns amid geopolitical tensions and pressure on global energy supplies. Adjustments in import demand by major economies such as China can influence international oil markets, although the overall effect on prices also depends on global production, inventories and geopolitical developments.

Beyond fossil fuels, China has emerged as a major supplier of renewable energy technology, accounting for approximately 70 percent of global wind power equipment and more than 80 percent of solar photovoltaic modules, according to the figures provided.

Over the past five years, exports of Chinese green energy products have reportedly helped partner countries avoid 4.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The expansion of renewable energy technology offers countries opportunities to diversify their energy sources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and advance their climate commitments. For developing economies, access to solar and wind technology can also support electricity generation and help address energy shortages, depending on infrastructure, financing and implementation.

China is also contributing to international weather monitoring through its independently developed Fengyun meteorological satellite system, which provides observation data free of charge to more than 130 countries and regions.

The system supports weather forecasting and the monitoring of atmospheric conditions, information that can help governments prepare for extreme weather events and improve disaster response.

In Africa, China has reportedly supplied free satellite receiving stations, meteorological analysis systems and related facilities to more than 20 countries. Such support can strengthen national weather services and improve access to information needed by farmers, disaster management agencies and other public institutions.

Agriculture is another area in which China’s experience and technology are contributing to global development.

Despite having approximately nine percent of the world’s arable land, China produces enough food to feed nearly one-fifth of the global population, demonstrating the importance of agricultural productivity, irrigation, improved seed varieties and modern farming techniques.

Chinese hybrid rice technology has also been introduced in 70 countries across the Global South. The figures provided indicate that the technology covers between seven million and eight million hectares of farmland overseas each year, potentially supporting food production for an additional 40 million to 50 million people annually.

For countries facing food insecurity and the effects of climate change, improved crop varieties and agricultural knowledge can help raise yields and strengthen rural livelihoods. However, the benefits depend on local growing conditions, access to inputs, farming practices and the ability of communities to adopt the technology successfully.

Taken together, these contributions illustrate how technological cooperation can support development beyond national borders. Energy technology, satellite data and agricultural innovation can help countries respond to shared challenges while building their own capacity to achieve long-term development goals.

For Africa, partnerships in these areas could offer opportunities to improve renewable energy access, strengthen early-warning systems, modernise agriculture and enhance food security.

The wider impact of such cooperation will depend on continued technology transfer, affordable financing, local skills development and the ability of partner countries to maintain and adapt the systems they receive.

China’s experience demonstrates the potential of investment in science, technology and productive capacity to contribute to global development, particularly when international cooperation is directed towards practical needs such as reliable energy, climate resilience and adequate food supplies.
