Machakaire issued the warning in a Facebook comment directed at Mushambi, who has built a large following through comic skits featuring his flamboyant Mama Vee character.

The minister said social media creators had a responsibility to consider the potential impact of their work, particularly when addressing issues of national importance or matters that may be regarded as culturally sensitive.

β€œSocial media must be used responsibly, particularly on matters that touch on government, our culture and the values of our people,” Machakaire wrote.

He also cautioned Mushambi against deliberately provoking the authorities or disregarding cultural sensitivities, saying such conduct would not be acceptable.

β€œDo not mistake restraint for weakness,” Machakaire said, urging the comedian to take the warning seriously and act with greater responsibility.

The minister did not disclose the specific post, video or incident that prompted his intervention.

Mushambi later indicated that he had held what he described as an β€œenlightening and constructive conversation” with Machakaire. He said he was simply a content creator and rejected suggestions that his work was linked to any hidden agenda.

In his characteristically humorous response, Mushambi acknowledged that his words could sometimes move faster than his thinking, writing: β€œI create content, share my thoughts and, sometimes, my words decide to take a little trip before my brain catches up!”

Despite the warning, Mushambi appeared to signal that he would continue creating content. He said he appreciated the discussion and the lessons from it, adding: β€œLesson learned, message received but don’t worry, business as usual!”

The exchange highlights the growing debate over the responsibilities of social media personalities whose work reaches large audiences. While comedy and satire often depend on freedom to question, exaggerate and entertain, public figures are increasingly being urged to consider how their content may affect social cohesion, cultural values and public discourse.

For content creators, the challenge is to maintain their creative voice while avoiding material that could be interpreted as deliberately inflammatory or disrespectful. For public officials, the response to controversial content remains an important test of how authorities balance social responsibility with open expression.

For now, Mama Vee’s response suggests that the comedian intends to continue entertaining his audience, albeit with the minister’s warning in mind.
