Prominent and controversial Zimbabwean banker Dr Munyaradzi Kereke has died in Harare after suffering a stroke.

Read E-PaperAccording to Hopewell Chin’ono Kereke had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Avenues Clinic.
He was an astute and talented banker whose career took a dramatic turn after leaving Stanbic Bank to join the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe under then governor Dr Gideon Gono.
His political career was later overshadowed by his conviction for r*ping a 12-year-old relative.
In 2024, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction and an effective 10-year prison sentence.
Kereke had been released on bail while appealing the conviction but was returned to prison following the ruling.
After his release, Kereke suffered a stroke.
