74 Zimbabweans Return Home After Escaping Violence in South Africa

A total of 74 Zimbabwean nationals arrived back home on Sunday after leaving Mossel Bay in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, where recent attacks against foreign nationals have heightened fears among migrant communities.

The group entered Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge Border Post aboard transport arranged with the assistance of Zimbabwean authorities. Upon arrival, they were received by officials from various government departments and border management agencies, who coordinated immediate support services.

Government Facilitates Safe Return

The repatriation effort was organised through Zimbabwe’s diplomatic mission in South Africa following reports of escalating hostility and attacks directed at migrants in Mossel Bay.

Authorities indicated that the returnees would receive essential assistance, including food supplies, counselling services and transport to their respective destinations as part of efforts to help them reintegrate with their families and communities.

Officials from social welfare departments are also expected to carry out assessments and provide psychological support to those affected by the traumatic events.

Embassy Urges Vigilance

In response to the ongoing unrest, the Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa has called on citizens living there to exercise caution and remain aware of their surroundings.

Zimbabweans have been encouraged to avoid areas experiencing disturbances, keep identification documents readily available and promptly report any threats or incidents to law enforcement agencies or Zimbabwean diplomatic offices.

Concerns Grow Over Migrant Safety

The return of the 74 citizens underscores increasing concerns about the security of foreign nationals in South Africa, where periodic outbreaks of anti-migrant violence have left many people displaced and fearful.

Mossel Bay is among the areas recently affected by tensions, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.

South African authorities have activated security and intelligence coordination mechanisms to address the unrest and prevent further violence.

Beitbridge Continues to Receive Returnees

Beitbridge Border Post remains a key gateway for Zimbabweans returning from South Africa, particularly during periods of social unrest and violence targeting foreign nationals.

The Government of Zimbabwe says it will continue assisting citizens affected by instability abroad and ensure that those returning home receive the necessary support.
