Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding has joined Government officials and DAPP Zimbabwe in distributing rice donations to 1,800 vulnerable residents in Epworth.
The donation exercise was held at Epworth Local Board alongside Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province Charles Tavengwa.
Ambassador Zhou said the donation is part of the long-standing friendship between China and Zimbabwe, highlighting the two countries’ cooperation during times of crisis.
“Over the years,Zimbabwe and China have proven time and again that we are brothers through thick and thin from Cyclone Idai to COVID-19 and the El Niño-induced drought,” Zhou said.
He described the latest rice donation as another sign of the strong relations between the two countries and their shared commitment to improving the livelihoods of Zimbabweans.
“Today’s rice donation is yet another testament to our lasting friendship and shared resolve to improve Zimbabweans’ livelihoods,” he said.
The ambassador also met some Zimbabwean returnees from South Africa and acknowledged the difficulties they face as they try to rebuild their lives.
“For them, starting over and rebuilding lives is no easy task,” Zhou said.
He said the assistance was intended not only to provide food relief but also to demonstrate solidarity with vulnerable communities.
“I hope our efforts bring not only comfort, but also a message of friendship and solidarity: they are not alone as we strive together toward food security,” he said.
Zhou said China and Zimbabwe would continue strengthening cooperation beyond emergency food assistance.
“With another El Niño-driven climate threat looming, our efforts must extend beyond emergency relief,” he said.
He added that the two countries would deepen cooperation in poverty reduction, food security, public health, climate resilience and capacity-building.
“We will deepen cooperation in poverty reduction, food security, public health, climate resilience, and capacity-building for Zimbabwe’s self-reliant, sustainable development,” Zhou said.
The latest donation comes as Zimbabwe continues efforts to strengthen food security and support vulnerable communities affected by economic and climate-related challenges.
Zhou said China and Zimbabwe would continue working together to promote sustainable development.
“Together, we press ahead,” he said.
