Harare Central Police Station has temporarily shut its holding cells as extensive renovations get underway to modernise the facility.
Police said suspects arrested during the construction period will be accommodated at other stations to ensure that renovation work proceeds without disruption.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the project, being undertaken by Mcheken Contractors, is expected to be completed by November.
According to Nyathi, Chief Inspector Pinky Rufaro Mataruka recently inspected the station together with representatives from the contracting company ahead of the commencement of the works.
The project is expected to take about 90 days and will involve several upgrades to the station’s infrastructure.
“Police have contracted a private company to carry out massive renovations at Harare Central Police Station,” said Comm Nyathi.
The renovations will include the construction of new holding cells equipped with improved ablution facilities.
The project will also see the installation of new roofing sheets, as well as the replacement of ageing sewer and water pipes.
Harare Central Police Station is a key policing facility in the capital and houses the provincial police headquarters and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) offices.
