However, Tehran views the situation differently. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has branded the UK an “accomplice” in the American campaign, a sentiment echoed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC issued a stern caution, stating that any nation providing military support to the United States would be held accountable for the ensuing consequences.
Further fueling the controversy, the IRGC-linked Tasnim News Agency reported that American bombing missions earlier this week were launched from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The UK Ministry of Defence has, to date, refrained from confirming the base’s involvement in these recent operations.
In response to these escalating threats, a spokesperson for the UK government affirmed the constant vigilance of Britain’s armed forces. “Our Armed Forces are prepared to safeguard the United Kingdom from any form of aggression, whether domestic or foreign. The UK stands ready 24/7 to defend itself,” the spokesperson declared. This defense strategy, they elaborated, encompasses a “layered approach to air and missile defence,” leveraging assets from the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force, equipped with advanced capabilities and operating in close coordination with NATO allies.
The spokesperson reiterated Britain’s consistent stance on the conflict, emphasizing a commitment to protecting its citizens, interests, and allies, all while adhering to international law and striving to avoid entanglement in a broader regional conflict.
At the heart of this dispute lies Britain’s contentious decision to permit the United States to operate from military installations hosting American personnel and aircraft. In March, the UK granted authorization for US forces to use bases such as RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. These facilities have been instrumental in operations targeting Iranian military infrastructure, which is believed to have been involved in attacks on Gulf states and commercial shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The arrangement has been extended under the leadership of newly elected Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who was apprised of the agreement’s continuation with Washington just last week. This comes despite repeated criticisms from US President Donald Trump, who has argued that the British government has not offered sufficient support to the military campaign against Iran.
The latest threats from Iran are not without precedent. Months prior, Tehran demonstrated its capacity and willingness to target British military assets. On March 19, two ballistic missiles were launched towards the UK-controlled Diego Garcia base in the Chagos Islands. While one missile reportedly failed mid-flight, the second was intercepted by a US warship before reaching its intended target.
This attack caught military analysts off guard, many of whom had questioned Iran’s ability to strike the remote Indian Ocean territory, situated approximately 3,600 kilometers from Iran. Subsequently, Israeli officials asserted that Tehran possesses missiles with a range of up to 4,000 kilometers, theoretically bringing parts of mainland Europe and potentially Britain within striking distance. However, then-Housing Secretary Steve Reed had previously stated that there was no specific intelligence indicating Iran’s direct intent to target the UK.
Recent assessments by military analysts suggest that Iran’s missile capabilities have been significantly diminished by sustained US airstrikes. Nevertheless, Iran continues its assaults against countries hosting American military bases across the Gulf region, while persistent attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz have severely disrupted one of the world’s most critical maritime trade arteries.
