Zimbabwean music icon Dr Thomas Mapfumo has called for unity, fairness and appreciation of individuals who support the growth of local talent, saying acts of generosity towards artists should be recognised rather than subjected to unfounded criticism.

Read E-PaperSpeaking about businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s support for musicians, Mapfumo said those who benefit from such assistance should acknowledge the positive impact it has had on Zimbabwe’s creative industry.
“He is my fan. If he buys my music, why should he not bless me? If anyone believes he has done anything wrong, let the law take its course instead of relying on unfounded accusations. Chivayo has supported many musicians in Zimbabwe, and we should all come together to celebrate that,” Mapfumo said.
The veteran musician’s remarks highlight the importance of supporting artists, many of whom rely on partnerships, sponsorships and financial assistance to continue producing and promoting Zimbabwean music.
Several musicians have received support from Chivayo, with beneficiaries saying such contributions have helped them acquire equipment, improve their livelihoods and continue preserving the country’s cultural heritage.
Mapfumo, who remains one of Zimbabwe’s most influential musicians, said public discussions around individuals should be guided by fairness and respect for due process.
His comments come as Zimbabwe’s creative sector continues to call for greater investment and recognition, with artists emphasising the need for more support systems to help the industry grow.
