Mbuya Nehanda is one of Zimbabwe’s most revered national heroines and an enduring symbol of courage, resistance, and patriotism. As a revered spirit medium of the Shona people, she played a leading role in the First Chimurenga (1896–1897), Zimbabwe’s first major armed uprising against the British South Africa Company.
At a time when colonial rule had deprived Zimbabweans of their land, livestock, culture, and freedom, Mbuya Nehanda inspired communities to unite and defend their homeland.
She encouraged her people to stand firm against oppression and fight for justice, dignity, and self-determination.
Her unwavering bravery made her a powerful figure in the struggle against colonialism. In 1898, she was captured by colonial forces and executed. Before her death, she is believed to have declared the immortal words, “My bones shall rise again.”
The prophecy later became a rallying cry for generations of freedom fighters during Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
Today, Mbuya Nehanda is celebrated as a national icon whose legacy continues to inspire Zimbabweans. Her courage, resilience, leadership, and unwavering love for her country remain a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in the fight for Zimbabwe’s independence and sovereignty.
