Read E-PaperThe grassroots movement, known as Super Size Me Africa Zimbabwe (SSMAZ), is building on the reported success of its recent empowerment and advocacy tour in Bulawayo, which brought together plus-size women and men to promote self-confidence, economic inclusion and peer support.
In a press release dated October 12, 2026, the organisation announced plans to extend its outreach through a free breast cancer screening initiative in partnership with the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe (CAZ), followed by a community gathering at Sherwood Golf Club in Mabelreign, Harare.
The screening programme is scheduled for Friday, October 16, as part of the organisation’s Pink October breast cancer awareness campaign. It will provide community members with access to clinical breast examinations, early detection counselling and health education in a supportive environment.
The initiative is also intended to address barriers to healthcare faced by plus-size people, including weight-related stigma that can discourage individuals from seeking medical attention.
SSMAZ founder and executive director Alice Chinya said the movement was committed to ensuring that plus-size people receive recognition, dignity and equitable access to healthcare.
“From Bulawayo to Harare, our movement continues to prove that plus-size individuals deserve visibility, dignity, and active health equity,” Chinya said.
She encouraged community members and allies to participate in the screening initiative and the organisation’s upcoming social and advocacy activities.
The October programme will continue on Saturday, October 31, with the Kings & Queens Meet & Greet Braai at Sherwood Golf Club in Mabelreign. The event will serve as a build-up to the forthcoming Walkathon Tour 2026 Harare Chapter, combining social interaction, health awareness and community networking.
Tickets are priced at US$20, inclusive of a braai platter featuring three types of meat, salads and starch. The programme will include live acoustic performances by Afro-Fusion and mbira artist Tendex, local DJs and networking opportunities.
Health screening booths will also be available at the venue, according to the press release.
The gathering will additionally serve as a launchpad for activities associated with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, connecting the organisation’s body-positive advocacy with broader efforts to promote safety, dignity and inclusion.
Through its planned activities, SSMAZ aims to create opportunities for plus-size people to access health information, build supportive networks and participate in public conversations about body image and equal treatment.
The organisation is inviting community members, partners and supporters to take part in the October programme. Tickets for the October 31 gathering are available through its community networks.
