Shoko Festival is using this year’s Mash Up Night to showcase the evolving sound of Zimbabwean hip-hop, bringing together established voices, rising talent and artists pushing the genre into new territory.
Set for September 25 at Harare Gardens, the night will be headlined by Saintfloew, Voltz JT and Mugaratia, with Xiba and Bulawayo-based artist Bhila also joining the lineup.
The programme reflects a deliberate mix of different generations and styles within Zimbabwe’s urban music movement.
For Saintfloew, Mash Up Night will be a major Shoko debut as a headliner. The rapper has continued to build momentum with tracks such as Uchazondida and Gucci N Dior, while his growing reputation for energetic live performances has positioned him as one of the newer acts to watch on the festival circuit.
Voltz JT brings a more established presence to the bill. A familiar name within Zimbabwean hip-hop, the rapper has built his identity around music that frequently engages with social issues, giving the lineup a different perspective from the newer generation of performers.
Mugaratia, meanwhile, returns to Shoko after appearing at the 2024 festival during Peace In The Hood in Chitungwiza. His return highlights the festival’s ongoing relationship with artists emerging from Zimbabwe’s independent urban music scene.
According to Mash Up Night curator Dennis Shoko, the intention was to capture the breadth of the country’s hip-hop culture rather than present a single sound or generation.
“When putting together the Mash Up Nights lineup, the idea was really to celebrate ZimHipHop in all its different forms,” he said.
Adding another dimension to the performances will be a full live band, allowing the artists to reinterpret their material outside the traditional DJ-and-MC setup.
The lineup also makes room for artists operating beyond conventional hip-hop boundaries. Xiba will make her Shoko Festival debut, while Bhila is expected to bring the Afro-soul and Mbaqanga influences associated with Bulawayo’s music culture to the Harare stage.
The festival’s collaborative spirit will extend beyond the performances through the return of Mashoko Tapes, now entering its third edition.
The residency brings together artists performing at Mash Up Night to create an original album, encouraging collaboration across different corners of Zimbabwe’s urban music scene. The third volume will feature Supermuno, Millz Million, Easy Ice, Luigi Badgenna and Hooksmith alongside Bhila, with the project expected to arrive ahead of the festival.
Now in its 16th edition, Shoko Festival continues to position itself as a platform for Zimbabwe’s alternative youth culture and creative industries.
