SRC Director General Nengomasha Steps Down, Mudzimiri Appointed Acting Head

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has confirmed the resignation of its Director General, Ms. Eltah Nengomasha, marking the end of her tenure with the national sports regulatory body after months of transition.

In a statement issued Friday, September 19, 2025, the SRC said Nengomasha, who tendered her resignation three months ago, officially concluded her duties with the Commission today.

“The SRC Board extends its appreciation to Ms. Nengomasha for her service and contributions during her time in office, particularly in strengthening governance structures and stakeholder engagement across the sporting sector,” the statement read.

Nengomasha’s departure comes at a critical time for the Commission, which has been under pressure to deliver on its mandate of overseeing the governance, development, and promotion of sport and recreation in Zimbabwe. During her tenure, she was credited with spearheading reforms aimed at tightening accountability and improving the Commission’s relationship with key stakeholders, including national sports associations, government, and international partners.

To ensure continuity in leadership, the Board has appointed Mr. Peter Mudzimiri, who has been serving as the Commission’s Director of Legal and Corporate Services, as Acting Director General with immediate effect. The SRC noted that the process for selecting a substantive Director General will be undertaken in due course.

Mudzimiri’s interim leadership comes at a time when the SRC is navigating several pressing issues, including the restructuring of some national sports associations, ongoing efforts to attract more funding into grassroots sports development, and enhancing compliance with international sporting standards.

While the Commission has not disclosed the reasons behind Nengomasha’s resignation, her exit adds to a growing list of leadership changes within Zimbabwe’s sporting landscape in recent years, as authorities continue to push for reforms in the administration of various codes.

The SRC Board stressed that it remains fully committed to fulfilling its statutory mandate of promoting and regulating sport and recreation in Zimbabwe. “The Board and management will continue working to ensure that the progress achieved in governance and stakeholder engagement is maintained and built upon,” the statement added.

The search for a substantive Director General is expected to attract significant attention from the sporting community, given the pivotal role the Commission plays in shaping policy, monitoring compliance, and driving development across the sector.

Nengomasha’s departure will likely spark debate about the SRC’s future direction, particularly on whether the reforms she initiated will be sustained and expanded under new leadership. For now, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how Mudzimiri steers the organisation during his acting tenure.
