Harare, Zimbabwe – In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations and unlock new economic frontiers, the new Ambassador of Bangladesh to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr. Shah Ahmed Shafi, today presented his credentials to President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.
The diplomatic ceremony marks a new chapter in the longstanding relationship between the two nations, with a renewed focus on industrial cooperation and trade expansion. Speaking to the media following his closed-door meeting with the President, Ambassador Shafi expressed his commitment to deepening ties, noting that the synergy between Zimbabwe’s natural resources and Bangladesh’s industrial expertise presents a unique opportunity for mutual growth.
A primary focus of the new diplomatic mission is the revitalization of the cotton value chain. Zimbabwe, a producer of high-quality lint, stands to benefit immensely from Bangladesh’s position as a global leader in the textile and garment industry.
Ambassador Shafi highlighted that Bangladesh is keen to explore investments in cotton processing and textile manufacturing within Zimbabwe. This aligns perfectly with the Second Republic’s “Vision 2030” goal of moving away from the exportation of raw materials toward high-value industrialization.
“We see immense potential in Zimbabwe’s cotton sector,” Ambassador Shafi stated. “By integrating our expertise in textile manufacturing with Zimbabwe’s quality cotton, we can create a robust value chain that generates jobs and boosts export earnings for both countries.”
Beyond textiles, the pharmaceutical sector has emerged as a key pillar for future cooperation. Bangladesh has a burgeoning pharmaceutical industry that exports to over 160 countries, and Ambassador Shafi indicated that there is significant interest in establishing partnerships to enhance Zimbabwe’s local drug manufacturing capacity.
Such a partnership would not only reduce Zimbabwe’s import bill but also improve the accessibility and affordability of essential medicines, contributing to the nation’s health security.
The presentation of credentials by the Bangladeshi envoy is seen as a further success of President Mnangagwa’s “Engagement and Re-engagement” policy. The President has consistently emphasized that Zimbabwe is “a friend to all and an enemy to none,” actively seeking partners who can contribute to the country’s socio-economic transformation.
During the meeting, President Mnangagwa welcomed the Ambassador and reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s readiness to facilitate Bangladeshi investments through the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA).
As Ambassador Shafi begins his tenure, the focus remains clear: transforming diplomatic goodwill into tangible economic outcomes. With cotton and pharmaceuticals leading the way, the partnership between Harare and Dhaka is set to become a model for South-South cooperation, driving progress and prosperity for both nations.
