Read E-PaperThe country is targeting a historic milestone by becoming the first in sub-Saharan Africa to adopt the technology, which is expected to strengthen refereeing standards and improve the accuracy of crucial match decisions.
Speaking at the official opening, ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi acknowledged the contribution of FIFA and Sakunda Holdings towards making the project possible, saying VAR would help restore confidence in football officiating and protect the game’s integrity.
He said the technology would support referees while ensuring that attention remained on the action on the pitch.
CAF Referees Manager and programme leader Felix Tangawarima also urged local match officials to adapt to modern developments, pointing out that VAR has become an integral part of the Laws of the Game.
ZIFA Referees Committee chairperson Faith Mloyi echoed the sentiments, stressing that the system was designed to assist referees rather than undermine their authority.
She highlighted the importance of accurate decisions in critical match situations, particularly goals, penalty incidents and cases of mistaken identity, where a single ruling can significantly influence the outcome of a game.
Meanwhile, Sports and Recreation Commission director Brian Hodza welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important development that supports the country’s sporting ambitions under Vision 2030.
Zimbabwe currently has seven VAR-trained match officials, with the ongoing programme expected to increase the number of personnel capable of operating the technology.
The first practical test of the system is scheduled for the Chibuku Super Cup final at Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe on 28 November.
