The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned a terrorist attack targeting the International Airport of Niamey in Niger, pledging solidarity with the West African nation as it confronts ongoing security challenges.

In a statement issued on 18 June 2026, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf denounced the attack, which was carried out against the airport in Niger’s capital.
“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission strongly condemns the terrorist attack carried out on 18 June 2026 against the International Airport of Niamey in the Republic of Niger,” the statement said.
Youssouf extended condolences to the families of those affected and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The AU Commission also commended the response of Niger’s Defence and Security Forces, saying their actions helped repel the attack and secure airport facilities.
“He commends the swift response of the Nigerien Defense and Security Forces, whose actions helped repel the attack and secure the airport facilities,” the statement noted.
The continental body reaffirmed its support for Niger in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, stressing its commitment to efforts aimed at preserving peace, security and stability across Africa.
The statement comes amid persistent security threats in the Sahel region, where extremist groups continue to stage attacks against civilian, military and strategic infrastructure targets.
The African Union said it remains committed to working with member states and regional partners to address the growing threat of terrorism and promote lasting stability on the continent.
