Mkhululi Dube (19), of Bango Village under Chief Bango, and Bukhosi Moyo (19), of Madwaleni Village under Chief Sithole, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Sam Chitumwa on Wednesday.

The two were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody until 10 November.

Prosecutor Tumelo Hindoga told the court that the alleged robbery occurred on 28 October 2025 at around 10.50pm at the intersection of Fort Street and 4th Avenue in Bulawayo’s city centre.

The court heard that Dube and Moyo allegedly approached Casper Zongeni, an unemployed man, before slapping him several times across the face.

They allegedly took his two pieces of chicken and chips before fleeing from the scene.

Zongeni subsequently reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of the two suspects, who were taken to Bulawayo Central Police Station.

“The accused persons, acting in common purpose, met the complainant, assaulted him with open hands several times on his face and forcibly took his two pieces of chicken and chips,” Hindoga told the court.

The stolen food, valued at US$4, was not recovered.

Although Zongeni did not sustain serious injuries, the court heard that the incident left him traumatised.

Magistrate Chitumwa advised the accused to approach the High Court if they wished to apply for bail, describing the charges as serious.

They were further remanded in custody as investigations continue, with the court also citing the need to protect the complainant.
