Chivayo announced the initiative in a social media post after praising a young parliamentarian for delivering what he described as a confident, intelligent, and well-articulated speech.

He described the youngster as “one for the future” and encouraged him to remain confident, speak boldly and continue pursuing his ambitions.

Chivayo also commented on the use of official titles, joking that the title “Honourable” applies to the Minister of State for Harare, while “His Excellency” is reserved for the President of Zimbabwe.

The businessman also defended the young parliamentarians following criticism over some of their stated ambitions, including wanting expensive smartphones such as the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

He argued that children should not be mocked for having ambitious dreams and said adults have a responsibility to guide young people rather than discourage them.

“I’m pleased to say having heard your requests, instead of buying expensive phones, I will give every Junior Parliamentarian US$1,500 each,” Chivayo said.

He said the money would be distributed through Youth Minister Tino Machakaire, although the date for the handover is yet to be announced.

The funds will reportedly be subject to approval from the respective school principals.

Since the Junior Parliamentarians are minors, Chivayo said the money would not be handed directly to them.

Instead, each beneficiary will have to attend the handover with a parent, guardian or responsible next of kin, who will receive the funds on the child’s behalf.

The initiative is expected to benefit the young parliamentarians by providing financial support for education and other approved projects.
