Read E-PaperThe curtain on the Chibuku Super Cup rises this Friday when Scottland welcome FC Platinum to Rufaro Stadium, with the rest of the opening round rolling out across Saturday and Sunday.
Defending champions Dynamos will open their campaign for a record-breaking fourth straight Chibuku Super Cup crown against TelOne at the same venue on Sunday, against a squad now steered by Joel Luphahla, the man who previously walked the touchline at Rufaro in DeMbare colours.
With the Super Cup now bolted onto an already demanding Castle Lager Premier Soccer League programme and the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, some observers have questioned how much punishment players can take, citing razor-thin windows for recovery between matches.
The pressure on Scottland is even more pronounced, with the club also carrying the burden of a CAF Champions League assignment stacked on top of their domestic obligations.
PSL chief executive officer Rodwell Thabe, however, remains unfazed, arguing that the current slate of matches is well within manageable limits and that clubs must rise to the challenge of competing on several fronts at once.
βWe have heard the chatter around a congested fixture calendar, but our view is that more football is a good thing for the domestic game,β Thabe said.
βIf you look at other leagues around Africa, we actually play a fair number of cup competitions, and there are countries that stage even more than we do.β
βExtra cup matches come with their own challenges, but they also bring more excitement, deeper engagement with supporters and stakeholders, and bigger financial returns for our clubs.β
While Thabe conceded that fitting in several tournaments inevitably squeezes the fixture log, he insisted the upsides far outweigh the headaches.
βFixture scheduling and congestion do throw up some drawbacks, but the workload at present is still manageable,β he maintained.
βClubs are involved in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, the Munhumutapa Cup and the traditional Chibuku Super Cup.β
βWe are satisfied with the competitions on offer right now, but the door remains open for other corporate partners who may wish to invest in the sport,β Thabe added.
βThe football community is moving in the right direction. Crowds are growing and the product is being packaged well. On behalf of the clubs, we are happy with the direction the game is headed.β
For teams still hunting league glory while chasing knockout silverware, the relentless run of matches is poised to expose the true depth of their squads, test player fitness and demand tactical versatility as the season moves into a make-or-break stretch.
