Read E-PaperDuring his previous court appearance, Tshuma reportedly told the court that he could not remember entering a guilty plea and maintained that he was innocent. When his lawyer presented him with a document bearing his signature, he also said he could not recall signing it.
The document was reportedly a plea and sentencing agreement relating to firearm and immigration charges, which had been negotiated over several weeks with his lawyer involved. His defence team subsequently cited concerns over sleepless nights and requested that he undergo a medical assessment.
The latest developments have raised questions about the progress of the proceedings, with the unresolved charges in South Africa continuing to delay his extradition to Britain.
Tshuma must first have the outstanding firearm and immigration matters finalised in Johannesburg before the extradition process can proceed, according to the reported legal position.
In July, South African Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi indicated that Tshuma would be extradited to the UK once the necessary documentation had been signed.
The United Kingdom and South Africa have an extradition agreement, while British prosecutors have reportedly authorised three murder charges against Tshuma in connection with the deaths.
The case has attracted attention because of the deaths of Zandile and her two daughters, who were buried in Zimbabwe in August.
The family is awaiting further developments as the South African proceedings continue, with the prospect of Tshuma eventually appearing before a British court to answer the allegations against him.
