The 3rd Soundz Taekwondo Championship, held at Epworth Hall in Harare last Saturday, brought together young athletes from across Zimbabwe in a celebration of discipline, talent, and sporting excellence.

The competition attracted clubs from Bulawayo, Bindura, Mvurwi, Mazowe, Kwekwe, Gweru, Chivhu, Chitungwiza, Marondera, Chegutu, Harare, and other areas, highlighting the growing popularity of taekwondo in the country.

Young athletes from four years old competed alongside adults, showcasing their skills under World Taekwondo rules. The tournament provided a platform for young fighters to develop their abilities, build confidence, and gain valuable competition experience.

Six outstanding athletes were recognised as the best performers of the championship — Kendrick, Kimberly Mugari, Ishmael Mugwagwa, Terence Mupero, Wayne Clement, and Forgiveness Makuchete. They received new taekwondo uniforms sponsored by Natsirai Maritsa from Vupa Academy as recognition of their dedication and talent.

Speaking at the event, Soundz Taekwondo Championship organiser James Kakuruwa said taekwondo should be understood as a sport that promotes discipline, respect, and personal development rather than violence.

“Taekwondo is not about fighting people in the streets. It is a sport that teaches discipline, self-control, respect, and confidence. We want young people to understand that the skills they learn on the mat are meant for competition and personal growth, not for causing harm in communities,” said Kakuruwa.

He said Zimbabwe has talented young athletes who have the potential to compete at the highest level and become future world champions if they receive proper training and support.

“Our dream is to see these young athletes representing Zimbabwe at international competitions and becoming world champions. Every champion starts somewhere, and events like this give them the exposure and experience they need,” he added.

Kakuruwa encouraged parents and communities to support children participating in martial arts, saying sports play an important role in keeping young people focused and developing positive values.

Taekwondo, an Olympic sport, combines physical fitness, technique, mental strength, and discipline. Beyond winning medals, it helps athletes develop qualities such as patience, determination, confidence, and respect for others.

The success of the 3rd Soundz Taekwondo Championship reflects the growing interest in martial arts in Zimbabwe and the potential of young athletes to make the country proud on the global stage.
