Speaking during a post-Cabinet briefing, the Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Zhemu Soda, emphasised that this initiative is deeply rooted in the nation’s supreme law.
“The Constitution of Zimbabwe provides for the conferment of honours and awards as national recognition and the immortalisation of individuals who have made significant contributions to Zimbabwe’s national development,” Dr. Soda stated. “The 2026 ceremony will take place during the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations, ensuring these heroes are honoured in the presence of the very institution that continues to safeguard their legacy.”
The theme for this year’s Heroes Day, “Lest We Forget,” serves as a clarion call for the nation to remain anchored in its liberation heritage. While the primary ceremony will be held at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, the spirit of remembrance will be decentralised across all ten provinces and 60 districts, ensuring that the recognition reaches every corner of the Motherland.
Following Heroes Day, the focus will shift to Rufaro Stadium for Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day. Under the theme “ZDF: Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030,” the event will feature a keynote address by His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF. The celebrations will blend military precision with national pride, featuring parades and displays that highlight the evolution and readiness of the country’s security apparatus.
The scale of this recognition extends beyond medals and ceremonies. The Zimbabwe Defence Forces has already activated its annual Community Assistance Week, a tangible demonstration of the military’s enduring bond with the people.
This mass conferment of Independence Medals is a strategic pillar of the Government’s broader honours and awards framework. By facilitating the distribution through the Ministers of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, the state ensures a meticulous and inclusive process.
