A 33-year-old man from Mubaira in Mohondoro has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for breaking into an elderly woman’s home and raping her, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed.
The Chivhu Regional Magistrates’ Court convicted the offender following the horrific attack on 26 August, 2026, at around 1900 at Showani village under Chief Rwizi.
“The offender proceeded to the victim’s homestead, where he forced his way into her room by kicking open a locked door,” said NPA.
“Once inside, he grabbed the elderly woman, forced her down onto her bed, and raped her once.”
The victim, aged 78, screamed for help, raising an alarm that sent the attacker fleeing from the scene.
“Her cries were heard by a member of the public who came to her assistance,” it stated.
The good Samaritan and the victim together reported the matter to police, leading to the offender’s swift arrest and subsequent conviction.
“The NPAZ condemns all forms of sexual violence, especially ones perpetrated against vulnerable members of society, and warns that perpetrators will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” the authority warned.
The sentence serves as a stark warning to would-be offenders targeting the elderly and vulnerable in rural communities.
