Mutare-based property developer Wilson Masokowere has been arrested over allegations of misusing trust funds valued at almost US$2 million.
Masokowere, who previously served as an administrator of the Destiny of Afrika Network (DANET), was arrested together with the organisation’s former treasurer, Themba Sauramba. Both men are being detained at ZRP Mutare Central and are expected to appear in court soon.
Police investigations centre on two separate transactions involving money allegedly belonging to DANET.
The first allegation involves the suspected unlawful withdrawal of about US$189,000 from the organisation’s CBZ Bank account.
Investigators are also probing a second amount of approximately US$1.8 million, bringing the total value of the funds under investigation to nearly US$2 million.
Authorities say the investigation is still underway and more details are expected to emerge as inquiries continue.
The arrests follow a lengthy legal battle between Masokowere and DANET over ownership and control of the organisation’s offices.
According to court records, Masokowere unsuccessfully challenged the matter in both the High Court and the Supreme Court. Despite the judgments, he allegedly remained in occupation of the premises, prompting further legal proceedings.
Masokowere and Sauramba are expected to make their initial court appearance in the coming days.
The allegations against the two men have not yet been heard or tested before the courts. They are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of law.
