New Era for Zimbabwean Sport as SRC Appoints Allen Mavunga Director General

The Sports and Recreation Commission has appointed Mr. Allen Takudzwa Mavunga as its new Director General, with effect from June 1, 2026.

The appointment was announced by the SRC Board of Commissioners and approved by the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, in terms of Section 24 of the Sports and Recreation Act [Chapter 25:15].

In a statement, the SRC said Mr. Mavunga brings extensive experience from both the corporate and sports administration sectors, having worked in multinational sports administration, lotteries and gaming, national disaster relief, and sports infrastructure development.

Mr. Mavunga holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Liberty University as well as a Diploma in Olympic Sports Management from the International Olympic Committee.

A former athlete, he previously represented Zimbabwe at regional competitions and has also served in directorship roles in basketball and baseball in the United States.

According to the SRC Board, Mr. Mavunga’s qualifications and professional background are expected to support the commission’s strategic thrust towards the commercialisation and long-term sustainability of Zimbabwe’s sports sector.

“The Board of Commissioners congratulates Mr. Mavunga on his appointment and wishes him success as he works to transform the SRC into the strategic engine of Zimbabwe’s sports economy, in fulfilment of the National Development Strategy 2, towards the attainment of Vision 2030,” the statement said.

The appointment comes at a time when Zimbabwe is seeking to strengthen sports governance, improve infrastructure development, and unlock economic opportunities within the sports industry.
