Robert Gabriel Mugabe remains one of the most influential figures in Zimbabwe’s history. As a nationalist, liberation fighter, educator and statesman, he played a central role in the struggle against colonial rule and helped lead Zimbabwe to independence on 18 April 1980.
Born on 21 February 1924 at Kutama Mission in Zvimba District, Mugabe began his career as a teacher before joining the liberation movement. As a leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), he became one of the key architects of the country’s fight for freedom, self-determination and majority rule.
Following independence, Mugabe became Zimbabwe’s first Prime Minister in 1980 before assuming the office of Executive President in 1987. A firm believer in Pan-Africanism, African unity and national sovereignty, Mugabe consistently championed the right of African nations to control their own resources and determine their own future.
